How to Audit Any Website's On-Page SEO (2026 Checklist)

A practical, no-fluff checklist — plus how to check any URL automatically in one call.

On-page SEO is everything a search engine reads directly from your page's HTML. Get it right and you make it easy for Google to understand and rank you; get it wrong and even great content underperforms. Here's the checklist we use, in priority order, with what "good" looks like for each.

1. Title tag

The single highest-impact on-page element. Every page needs a unique <title> that includes its primary keyword, ideally 10–60 characters. Too short wastes the slot; too long gets truncated in results.

2. Meta description

Doesn't directly rank you, but it's your ad copy in the search results and drives click-through. Aim for 50–160 characters, one per page, written for a human.

3. Headings (H1/H2)

Exactly one <h1> per page describing the main topic, with <h2>s structuring the rest. Multiple H1s or none at all is a common, fixable mistake.

4. Canonical link

A <link rel="canonical"> tells search engines the preferred URL and prevents duplicate-content dilution. Missing canonicals are one of the most overlooked issues.

OG tags control how your page looks when shared on social and in chat apps. No OG tags means an ugly, low-CTR preview.

7. Image alt text & content depth

Images need descriptive alt attributes (accessibility + image search), and thin pages (under ~300 words) struggle to rank for competitive terms.
